Year of Wonder by Geraldine Brooks
This
is an historical novel based on the bubonic plague years in
Devonshire England in 1666.It is a dark tale centered on a young wife
and mother Anna Frith , who although a uneducated country wife has
lots of commonsense and intelligence.
Left
to fend for her family when her husband is killed in a work accident
she takes in a nice man as a lodger. Inadvertently he brings the
plague to the village where it quickly spreads. This is the tale of
the historic actions that the village takes and the intertwining of
the people in the village.
This
is based on a true facts . The village of Eyam actually is known as
the Plague Village.
It is
a dark novel to read but compelling and intriguing.
